The Problems Live at the Purple Onion

The City's Best Writers and Comedians Join Up to Fight Crime, Perform Shows

San Francisco is known for its stellar spoken word and comedy scenes, but rarely do both scenes intersect. Until now, that is. Supergroup The Problems mashes up the best from both worlds for a show chockful of stories, sketches, stand-up and the occasional video.

The Problems consists of Joe Donohoe (author of To Be Santa You Have to Be Tested), Harmon Leon (author of Republican Like Me and The Harmon Chronicles) Mike Spiegelman (of the comedy duo Laundry Basket & Spiegelman and former Fresh Robots member), and Bucky Sinister (author of Whiskey and Robots).

“None of us fit in to the current state of the scenes, either for comedy or poetry, so we formed our own supergroup,” says writer Bucky Sinister. “You might see sketch comedy, stand-up comedy, or four short one man shows. It depends on the night and the performers. It’s where tragedy, comedy, and drama meet on one stage.”

"It's an honor to perform at the Purple Onion," adds comedian Mike Spiegelman. "'Smother Brothers Live at the Purple Onion' is my favorite album. I can't believe we'll be performing in the same room where they sang that 'Boil the Cabbages Down' song."
